#45. PARK SITTER'S LAMENT

#45. PARK SITTER'S LAMENT

Sit long enough and you notice.

The benches are uncomfortable, by design. Maybe I’m wrong, but I think the old benches had three slats on the back rest. The new ones have two. And they are angled to rub the middle of your spine. Sit more than ten minutes, and you’ll begin to wonder why you feel uncomfortable.

An ergonomic design wizard must have counseled:

“You want people to stay a long time? Use the three slats.
You want them to move on so others can sit? Use two.”

Check it next time you’re in Washington Square. Or your local park.
