#87. TOMIKA

#87. TOMIKA

She’s there many days. Quietly off to the side of the Arch. Sits low under a red umbrella with small blue and yellow balloons attached. At her feet is a small sign with a white palm drawing:

                             Fortune Teller – Palm Reading

How much you wonder? Nothing. She has printed in white chalk all around her feet: FREE. FREE. FREE. She offers a low red stool to potential customers so they can huddle knee to knee.

A young man takes the seat. She asks to see both palms together.
“Ah,” she begins. I can’t hear what he learns. Only he can say.

Why does she do this? Only she can say. But she does tell me this: In five years, she’s talked to 6,000 people from 80 countries in Washington Square.
Believe it or don’t.
