#93. GIVE PEACE A CHANCE
I ask but I think I know the answer I’ll hear.
“Not necessarily. There’s always somewhere in the world
that needs peace.”
The history of the Park and the history of the Quakers in Manhattan intersect on the first Sunday of each month. For one hour, a small group of Quaker Friends hold a vigil for peace. This Sunday there are four, holding a banner, beige with dark brown lettering (no neon colors for the Quakers!). It’s called a Silent Witness for Peace and Nonviolence. Though no one is silent today as they chat among themselves and talk to me. But Quakers don’t chant or proselytize.
How long has this been going on? At least since the Vietnam War, which means 50 years. Quakers are committed to active peacemaking. And they remind Greenwich Village once a month in the Park.
